Vigan was formerly known as "Cuidad Fernandina" is one among the unique cities in the Philippines that was able to preserve its historical origin as can be gleamed from its Spanish inspired architecture. It was captured and settled by the the Spaniards in 1572 and became the center of Spanish political and religious power in the north of Luzon. In 1758, Vigan became the seat of Diocese of Nueva Segovia.
According to legend, it got its name "Vigan" from a tree "Bigaa", a giant Taro plant that was common in the area. A Spaniard, it was told as met and asked a local what is the city's name and the local believing that the Spaniard was asking about the name of tree seemed to be pointing to a tree, replied "Bigaa Apo"
